Mentos Promotes Singaporean Night Of Passion In Ad That's Less Than Minty Fresh
Love scenes in movies are usually accompanied by a sensual, yet stirring soundtrack that highlights the passion and tenderness of the couple's...ahem, performance. But one ad is hoping to send couples in Singapore off to bed with an entirely different soundtrack.
Mentos is the chewy mint famous for making soft drinks fizz up, but now the brand is hoping to make passions bubble over for Singapore's National Night.
The Asian city state has a problem with its incredibly low birth rate. Spo to boost the population, the government has offered a cash reward to prospective parents. They have even set aside tonight to be a national night of...well, you get the idea.
Mentos is encouraging lovers to get fresh with a music video that suggests couples "make fireworks" tonight. The song isn't exactly Marvin Gaye or Barry White in its poetry. The clumsy hip-hop track includes the line "like a government scholar, I wanna cram real hard".
Aside from not making a whole lot of sense, the innuendos are more awful than aphrodisiac. It's highly unlikely that Singapore is to see a baby boom thanks to the lyric "if a fish and a lion can spawn an infant, you and I together let's not do different".
This questionable grasp of biology may explain why the country has a birth rate problem in the first place.
With one final mood killing phrase, the clip encourages its no-longer-amorous audience to "let your patriotism explode".
While the clip hasn't set our pulses racing, it's certainly won a lot of attention. Put together by BBH, the video has had over 188,700 views in just eight days. While it has won nearly 28,400 shares, the 25 articles written about it seem to regard it as bizarre, while YouTube commenters are busy arguing about the cost of pushchairs.
At a painful three minutes long, the ad is probably the only element of National Night that Singaporeans won't wish lasted a little bit longer.
